Borrowing choreographic ‘riffs’ from dance-theatre, popular culture, sports, quotidian rituals, and the echoes of their respective decades-long practices, Shammgods mash up found sources in an improvised durational choreography that subverts conventional ideas of the ‘virtuosic’. Dressed in a mish-mash of op-shop-sourced active-wear emblazoned with aspirational slogans, the performers present as both pedestrian and full of potential, as their attempts to be Gods on stage (Shammgods) butt up against the reality of their limitations and they find unexpected means of transcending them. As they perform a series of ‘tracks’ comprised of these choreographic riffs, the three performers become front-men for non-existent bands, at once both Gods of the stage and hopeless frauds.
